Curatorial Statement

Heidi Lau is a Macau-raised artist who currently lives and works in the United States. In the past decade, she constructed her unique sculptural language with the medium of ceramic, grappling with her identity as a diasporic artist positioned within the East-West continuum. “Empire Recast” is  Lau’s first solo exhibition in her home city after she participated in the 58th International Art Exhibition of La Biennale di Venezia,  which deeply expresses the artist's reflective nostalgia.

Lau’s hand-crafted ceramic sculptures and installations often summon the indigenous cultures and collective memories of Macao. Exhibited at the Grand Lisboa Hotel and the Grand Lisboa Palace, her work references her intimate experience visiting Dr. Stanley Ho’s art collection as a child, traces her wanderings in the old gardens and abandoned ruins of the city. This body of work not only embodies nostalgia for the past but also presents a pursuit of alterity and transcendence while Lau reflects on the current times.

Conceived amidst the pandemic when physical homecoming has become impossible for many, this exhibition offers access to a spiritual home constructed with salvaged fragments of cultures and memories, and creates, with works of sentimentality and imagination, heterotopias in an era where dislocation and alienation have become inevitable.
